Batwoman Earns its Wings

When the CW announced Javicia Leslie as the newest Batwoman the network knew it was entertaining an uncharted territory with a list of firsts. Leslie’s casting makes her the first-ever African American woman to lead a comic-based series, play Batwoman, and for extra merit, as a proud member of the LGBT community, she is the first lesbian woman of color to lead a series also. 

The season 2 premiere doesn't waste any time jumping into the action and fixing the series Kate Kane problem. It’s not long before Leslie’s character Ryan is introduced and we see that season 2 is going to be a very different show. Season 1 of Batwoman dragged primarily due to Rose’s character being outshined by virtually all of her costars and the fact that she was never relatable as a hero, so the new season wastes no time making the audience connect with the character of Ryan. Writers thankfully have avoided using any type of stereotypical tropes that usually befall Black characters in urban settings, especially in a crime-filled city like Gotham. Instead, writers have opted for presenting Ryan as a once optimistic resident of Gotham whose life is drastically changed after suffering a great tragedy. And yet the tragedy doesn’t turn her into an angry one-dimensional character. She has the much-needed personality that was missing in season one to match the energy of costars Campus Johnson and Nicole Kang, as well as the commanding presence needed to wear the Batsuit and terrify criminals throughout the city. Not to mention the relationship she has with her plant is the cherry on top.

Already I'm loving the direction season two is taking. In regards to the dynamic between the hero and villain, I'm already more invested in the relationship between Ryan and Alice as compared to the first season with Kate. Acknowledging the writers were trying to parallel the Batman and Joker dynamic, the reason people tuned into season one was to see what made Batwoman unique, not for the female version of Batman. 

With Luke Cage canceled on Netflix, and Black Lightning airing its final season, Leslie's Batwoman couldn't have come at a better time to fill the growing void of Black superheroes on television. Here’s hoping the series is here to stay. 

Arrowverse Forever

The CW network recently released the sizzle trailer for the upcoming season of its superhero shows adopted from DC comics. Dubbed the “Arrowverse” after its flagship series Arrow premiered in 2012 and successfully opened the door for spin-off shows such as The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and Batwoman. For years the series remained the anchor of the network but with the release of the newest trailer, the network has implied it wants to move away from the name since Arrow has ended its 8 season run.

It is slightly understandable that the network would want to look to the bright future of the returning and new series the network offers (looking at you Superman and Lois), however, the legacy that is Arrow doesn’t have to be erased to accomplish this, especially after the years of waiting fans endured just for the characters to exist in one collective universe. Between the shutdown of filming for shows last season due to COVID-19 concerns and the forced rework to shows such as Flash and Batwoman, one would think the network would want to keep things as normal as possible for faithful fans. However, changes such as these could be the catalyst for the network ready to embrace change. 

While acknowledging the impact of Arrow as the springboard for the world of superheroes the trailer wraps with a reminder that the network is slowing down anytime soon. Which do you prefer CWverse or Arrowverse?

The Historical Feat of The Old Guard and Batwoman

African American women are finally breaking into the comic-inspired movie and television genres and taking their long-awaited places at the forefront. In 2020 we finally have a comic adapted movie to be directed by a Black woman as well as the first-ever casting of a Black woman as the lead in a series based on a comic.

Netflix set another record with the release of its action-filled The Old Guard. Starring Charlize Theron, the movie is based on the comic of the same name and follows a group of immortal warriors as they initiate the newest member among them, while also trying to conceal their thousand-year hidden identities. The movie has been widely celebrated for its action sequences and was propelled to #1 on the streaming service, but still very few realize the Black girl magic involved behind the scenes and how director Gina Prince Bythewood added her signature touch. She's directed films such as Love and Basketball and Biker Boys, proving her ability to balance multiple characters while conveying strong emotions. As the first African American woman to direct a comic adapted film, this is somewhat more special as the Old Guard isn't necessarily a "black film" bypassing the common prejudicial practice of using a director of color for only "urban" projects (i.e. Black Panther).  

 

On the television front, fans of black superheroes are rejoicing as the CW has officially cast Javicia Leslie as its newest Batwoman. Following the departure of Ruby Rose, Leslie is picking up the mantle making history as the first African American Batwoman and as the lead, the first-ever comic adapted series featuring an African American woman. Leslie has previous experience from the series God Friended Me, which aired on CBS,  the same station to debut Supergirl, and will be playing the role of Ryan Wilder. Ryan is described as “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and also could kill you with her bare hands.” And for anyone worried about authenticity in relation to the Batwoman mythology, Leslie is a proud bisexual woman, which she expressed stating, “"I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” Leslie said in a statement." Her casting makes her the first-ever Black woman to lead a series based on a comic. 

The Old Guard ended with plenty of room for a sequel, and if that's the case hopefully Bythewood will be brought back on board and lighting will strike twice. As far as Batgirl What I find most exciting is the possibility of a crossover with the Arrowverse shows, especially Black Lightning, a show that has already name-dropped Gotham city. Naturally, there is no premiere date for the return of the series but it is definitely worth the wait. Both Bythewood and Leslie and pushing the boundaries previously set for Black women behind in front of the camera adding to the narrative that there's no limit to what anyone can do.
