Nia DaCosta #1 Movie Debut

Nia DaCosta has secured another spot in the history books bringing a celebration to the start of Black History month 2022.

Previously the director broke records when Candyman grossed near $25 million its opening weekend, and now the same film has earned her the record of having the first #1 film directed by a Black woman.

A follow-up to the original released in 1992, the modern version has an all-Black cast co-written with Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld, and stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

While DeCosta is relishing in the news of her newest achievement, she is also staying busy directing the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels. In addition to exploring the narrative of the main character Carol Danvers, the movie will see the return of Akira Akbar, as Monica Rambeau, and incorporate the character Ms. Marvel, Iman Vellani from the upcoming Disney+ series.

DaCosta has proven that she can tackle multiple genres with a balance of interesting characters. I am excited to see what DaCosta will bring to the Marvel Cinematic universe when she helps to bring the MCU its first Black onscreen female superpowered hero. In the meantime, what did you think of Candyman
